The shapes are determined by the shape of the tools more than by my will. This scroll button is almost completely shaped with one curved scraper, one small gouge and a chisel. There is a light sanding before varnishing so that I can avoid burning through high spots while sanding between coats of varnish.
I make my f-hole edges a consistent 6 or 7mm thick rather than leaving them the full thickness of the top.
Tool swallower.
